Leadership program to encourage young growers
spacer

A leadership program is currently being organised by Australian Banana Growers’ Council (ABGC) that will provide a variety of skills and opportunities for young banana growers aged 18 to 35 years old.

Leading the Way Forward is scheduled to take place on Tuesday March 6 and Wednesday March 7, 2012, and will aim to provide young growers with a better understanding of the banana industry in a variety of leadership capacities, including media and networking skills.

There will also be an optional field day on Thursday March 8, which will include a visit to the Brisbane Markets, Queensland Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) Eco-Sciences Precinct and Banana ripening companies.

Co-ordinator Dianne Fullelove said along with providing information in managing people and time, attendees will also be able to pick up new skills for their business.

“Young growers these days are typical of anyone in their age group – they are keen to learn new skills and meet others in their industry,” Ms Fullelove said.

Attendees will also be able to hear a number of expert industry spokespeople and attend a networking dinner.

“It is vital that we provide opportunities for young growers of today that will help them further their knowledge so that they can become positive leaders of tomorrow,” she said.

Cost of the workshop, meals, field trip and accommodation is funded through Australian Banana Growers Council and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).
